Original phone in 92 500E, is it GSM?

GSM phones were just showing up in Europe in 92-93 so it's likely that your buddy's car did not have a GSM phone originally.
At the time when they did show up they made pretty useless car phones as the service was only limited to city centers.
it took about a decade more before the US had any kind GSM coverage. If your car is a Euro car, check for a sim card, it may be a larger sim card that's about the size of a credit card which slides into the phone.

Ok, thanks. My car is sold new in the US so then the phone is probably useless..
