Smooth as butter, purposeful and effortless.

I realize i have only posted about fixing up. So here is my first comment on driving Layla. I took her up island for a 4 hour run. Wow, smooth as butter,
purposeful when you hit the accelerator and effortless highway driving.
I like the behaviour of the transmission, it shifts in the right places,
gives me the rev's i want (fiddled with settings). Only concern was
a little nervousness in the front felt through the stearing wheel.
I suspect that upcoming wheel and tire upgrades and an alignment
will fix this. It's thumbs up all the way on my first significant ride.

I had the same feeling with my car, a while back. Found out it was actually the whole wheel-joint-thingie (whatever that little stick in rubber on that large triangle is called :P) that had >10mm play, while actually 1mm was allowed... I later found out that this is something quite common for these cars, so might be worth it to check that stuff, first.

Aha, you mean the control arm bushing or the control arm little joystick thingie ?

The bushing are PITA to change because they rust in place.. they wear out and cause a clunk in the front-end (e.g coming down a drive way)

But not sure how the joystick thing effects ride/handling !?
 
Joystick thingy = ball joint. On late style LCA's (for cars with 320mm or 334mm front brakes), the ball joint is not replaceable separately, you need to change the entire control arm.

^^ What you said. The description is the same as I told my mechanic a while back. A week later he had the car in the shop, and phoned me to tell me he was scared to drive it off the ramp ;)

What is the collective wisdom when changing the Joystick Thingy to use the LCA with early Sportline bushings for a firmer ride?

I'd get the late J.T. with early (stiff) Sportline bushings if you want to go that route, but it will make the ride noticeably firmer. I did this on a couple of cars and I'm not sure that I would do it again. If you are sticking with small brakes, you can replace the ball joint and bushings separately. Put another way, we'd need to know more specifics about what you're thinking of doing, and with which current/future brakes, etc...

I didn't know there was a play limit on the bushings... I remember the idler arm bushings having a 1mm limit.

I think they mean a play limit on the ball joint. I'm not aware of any FSM limit on the bushings.

The rubber bushings usually are a visual inspection only. When they are either cracked badly, or oil-soaked and swollen, they should be replaced. There is almost never any noises associated with failing bushings. The "clunking" that sometimes occurs is from a failing ball joint.

Hi GSXR.

In this case it was the bushings as the joints were OK. It was 4 hours to replace !! because the bolts were so rusted they were like welded.
After that it was a smooth sail.
