Nice ..... Are you base lining the 500 before you do some mods? If so what do you have planed ?

.

Was just curious to see what it puts down...
Already at factory power/torque specs with cutting out at 5k rpm during the run due to cloggec cats.
Will replace them and do a proper run and post it.

Dave, whereabouts in the UK are you?

I am in the Beds/Herts area.

north yorkshire mate. currently restoring my grey 500e. I'm used to nissan skylines but git a great deal on a 500e so thought why not ;) bits are hard to find here in the uk

What bits are you looking for ? Never had/have problems obtaining parts in the UK . ECUs are tshared with 129s and 140s, suspension bits and hose lines are still available from MB dealers .

Are you referring to item 122 and 123 here . If so and if you haven't checked they are stupid money new . In this regard , whether available or not, I would search for a used one worldwide. You might have more luck from guys here in the US like Dave Hendy . Or keep an eye on eBay.

There is quite a few regular W124s around in the UK with sportline interior(which is more or less the same as the 036 interior).
Good chance you find these bits from breakers or ebay uk.

Quite! Raikku is correct . Look out for C124s rear console as well . Have u checked with Mercman in the south ?

Dave, why don't you creat a nice owners thread so we can see your project and not derail Raikku's thread. It would be nice to see more UK owners here .

@Raikku, is your shop up and nice running now? Would really love to visit you one Saturday perhaps to see your work. Helping a friend restore a 6.9 at the moment and its 90% done. When this is complete we'll find .

+1 on owners thread,Dave!

Maybe we should open a thread for UK owners as well.....

Bing, the shop is up and running, thanks for asking!

More than welcome to visit me when you got some time!

That 6.9 is stunning!

Need more pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a quick update:

Finally moved to the UK a bit over a week ago.
Drove the 036 within a day from Stockholm to Calais(over 2000km),only stopping for food and petrol.
Amazing long distance car, arrived tired but relaxed.

Will take now a while until I will have time to work on the 500 again as setting up my new company and all the personal moving stuff will keep me busy for a while,I guess...

Hello Raikku,

Did you shut down your workshop in Finland?

I'm looking for interior parts such as the handle on the rear center console and the center console lid
Yes 122 and 123 is the same parts that I'm after :) thanks

Dave,

Here is some complete rear seat midconsoles. They are from the same vendor in the US and steep pricing IMO. I'm not sure about the condition, but it's at least both parts you need.

Nice to see that the new owner was able to complete my project!

Are you still planning to get a new paint and perfect finish or will this be your new "daily beater"?

IMO those 3pc AMGs would be so much better looking!

Thanks for the 6.9 pics, Bing! despite my addiction to "CAR" throughout that era, this be the first time that I have seen an under hood pic of a right hook 6.9. Where did they bury the washer fluid reservoir on that rascal? The piping along with the interesting use of a large reservoir cap as a union point is clearly evident..

Hi Juho,

it will be repainted this winter along with finishing up all the other odd bits and pieces.

No way I will use it as a beater, just bought a W463 300GE for that.

Thanks for reminding me about the wheels :)

Funny you asked. The washer reservoir (which was out when i took this shot ) sits on our passenger side, right side looking at the picture. Of course this also means that it's right hand drive bloody specific and it's NLA new :x. Totally discolored and we've yet to find one. Tried to clean it , put it under a blue light and all these other silly internet ideas to try to make it white but no crap works! All the washers lines have been replaced now so thats all nice and white. One day, just one day maybe ebay will throw a brand new one at us.

Oh, yes! I expanded the picture and now I see the bracket.

How far from Middlesbrough? I am in Ibiza presently, next time i am back we could meet up. These cars are a challenge in the UK and Spain to maintain and get the parts( Contrary to what folks say). No knowledge and resource interest base like in the US of A.

After investing dozens of hours of labor to fabricate headers, I expect you'll find maybe 10hp gain. MAYBE. Other people have reported power losses after custom header installs. I seriously would not waste the time or money.

I didn't see that the car already had the facelift hood... yeah, I'd get the matching boot lid, and correct E500-specific lenses. No point it switching back unless you really prefer the early appearance.

:hornets:

You know I keep seeing this type statement being made on how efficient the exhaust is on these cars and it's pure BS.
With log manifolds and small pipes if freeing the exhaust does not show a major performance increase in these cars then there is a restriction upstream in the intake, cams or heads. This factory exhaust system may be well engineered to work well with the other limitations but it is no great and wonderful performance design on it's own and that's a fact.
If you are looking at head-work and intake work along with cams that changes upstream flow there is no way in the world I would consider bolting a stock exhaust manifold back on that motor. If you do the upstream work to increase flow or use nitrous or any kind of intake boost then headers and a true free exhaust to get the results out will show major performance gains it's just simple physics.
In the end no matter who designed them all engines are just big air pumps. More air and fuel in and out = more performance period.

Am around 200 miles south...

Is your 500 in the UK or Spain?

I never said they were efficient. I said there was very little (if any) power gain by replacing the exhaust, even with $10k of full tubular headers and all custom pipes from the engine to the bumper.

And it's been stated repeatedly, sure, you can boost top-end power with camshafts, head work, short-stack intake, etc... and lose the bottom-end torque. Fine on the track, awful on the street. How is this a good thing?

Great, go ahead and build it! Make sure to post dyno graphs before and after...

Ok let's take this step by step

I never said they were efficient. I said there was very little (if any) power gain by replacing the exhaust, even with $10k of full tubular headers and all custom pipes from the engine to the bumper.
Not disputing that on a stocker. I am saying it's very very odd that ANY engine with small diameter pipes and a log manifold will not show substantial gains with headers and a true free flowing exhaust and shows that there is some thing upstream that is holding down flow in a big way. It's all simple physics and better flow out should produce better power but according to you guys doesn't. One thing that is really screwing the header idea up is the 8 exhaust ports in each head on the M119. It would take individual tubes matched to the port diameter off each port to a Y then tubes back to the collector to get a set of headers on that motor to flow and perform right. What a freekin nightmare design from a real world performance stand point!

It's done all the time with other cars the question is do you want a refined cruiser or a street crusher. These cars run the super high gears with smallish displacement engines. Yes moving the power curve up with better flowing heads, more cam and a freer exhaust will make it softer on the bottom but should also produce large gains on the upper side and more RPM. Simple solution is GEAR THE THINGS!
If you want a cruiser leave it stock if you want a rocket then gear the thing and do the work just make sure you beef the bottom end to handle the extra RPM's it will need to turn to make the power.

Great, go ahead and build it! Make sure to post dyno graphs before and after...

No thanks as MB seems to have gone to great lengths to prevent performance tweaking on this design with out spending a fortune. Example is the 8 port heads on the exhaust that make the M119 so hard to use headers on, the super restrictive intake design with all those twists in the runners down to the throttle body buried in the center ( which IMO is the real flow restriction that is preventing real world performance gains on this engine!!), the 11 to 1 compression that kills the idea of effectively using any kind of boosting with pump gas chemical or otherwise on the street and the list goes on.
The M 119 is a nice street engine for a cruiser super smooth and responsive + refined however it is a real PITA to try to modify. Frankly there are a LOT better platforms to work with out there than a M119 to use to power a real street killer!

The key with headers for this engine is long tubes and a correct collector.

I might want to add that I am building(I do NOT mean rebuilding) many road and race engines n/a as well as force induction professionally.
Another part of my work includes being part of the R&D department(I do mostly hardware but also engine calibration) for a well known BMW tuning company.

Just out of curiosity,if somebody would come up with a header that gains in real life 20hp+ and is manufactured by a well know exhaust company, would people pay 2k$+ for it?

At the end of the day,an engine is an engine.Nothing else.

Similar engine layouts have the tendency to respond similar to modifications,at least in my experience...

EEPROM is already something I am researching and do myself

Agree with you here on all points and will watch for updates. One thing to look hard at on these engines is that intake plenum design. With the hood line demanding a low profile intake MB placing that throttle body down so low in the center then running the plenum way down underneath the runners in the valley with all that heat that is a downright weird intake design that has to hurt the performance potential of that engine pretty badly.

Dave,

where in N. Yorks are you. How far from Middlesbrough? Thats home for me in UK. In Ibiza at the moment as is my car. Bits and knowledge of the cars plus interest is scarce in the UK no scrap yards like in the US of A to just pull parts of scrappers and the main dealers especially N. Yorks and Teesside are hopeless.

I'm about 40 minuets away from Middlesborough :) my cars going nowhere fast. saving for a full respray. what parts are u looking for?

That "weird" design results in long intake runners, which boosts low/mid RPM torque, and does not restrict power at least to 6600rpm (see dyno graphs of stock motors, they don't drop off much beyond the power peak). Part of that is due to variable valve timing.

I'm still confused as to why so many people think that a motor designed in the late 1980's, and had probably one of the highest HP per liter at the time for production cars, should somehow be easy to improve and modify 25 years later when most normally-aspirated "modern" cars are barely producing the same specific output? Seems like a lot of complaining about MB doing it wrong, yet so far, nobody has been able to do better with the same motor. Modders should go buy a Ford/Chevy/Mopar instead, along with a Jegs and Summit catalog. I don't get it. Kinda like marrying Kiera Knightley and then afterwards complaining she has no top end. Eh?

I had the lower portion of the intake on my 560SEC M117 (a roughly similar design/layout "running the plenum way down underneath the runners in the valley") ceramic coated when I redid the top end 4.5 years ago, to repel/resist heat.

That coating, as well as the heat-retarding ceramic coating on my exhaust manifolds on the M117, really stimulated my butt dyno something fierce !

Cheers,
Gerry

Haha...was down at Ace Cafe last night with the old battleship...

Did a bit of an experiment and wrapped the car solid gloss black and left cladding claddings and bumpers 199...

Love the two tone look,so car will be sprayed 040 with claddings and bumpers in 199 with satin clear coat.

Still shopping for a pre facelift bonnet to complete the return to pre facelift look...

I just read Raikku's entire thread about restoring his car and by near the end of it was thinking how nice it would be to meet Raikku some day. His discipline, expertise, enthusiasm/positive attitude, and overall craftsmanship and demeanor truly won me over.

Then I saw Dave's link and now realize that will never happen. I am sad beyond words for Raikku and his family.

On a lesser note, I also do not understand why this beautiful car ended up in a breakers yard.
