Disrupted Crashed E320 (A very bad day) - Now 190E Project/Restoration

190 subframe cleaned and ready for the blast cabinet.

IMG_20240623_114258226_HDR~3.jpg

E320 subframe moved inside. The wood is to lock the hubs so I can remove the inner axle bolts. Both these easily pushed out of the hubs with just my hand. One axle came out easily as it's obviously been replaced once.

IMG_20240623_160521981.jpg

I did some cleaning, and removed three large bags of trash and junk.
I also disposed of a couple of empty buckets, including the dead mice inside them.

The triple square bolts on the second axle are stuck fast. It felt like I was going to strip out the bolt head, or break the tool. I'll search for some tricks here and the rest of the 'net.

Finally some re-assembly.

W208 CLK430 16mm rear sway bar installed with aftermarket poly bushings. Thank you user Rocambolesque At GRM.
The crusty brackets you see will be addressed in the future.

IMG_20240702_144304963_HDR.jpg

Also reinstalled the fuel tank with new strainer.

I needed to get something installed for my mental well being. It is difficult to find specific parts as the piles are everywhere. Lifted me up a little to actually install something.

Looking good!

I didn't realize the 208 rear bars fit the 201. What's the silver bracket inboard of the sway bar bushing?

I will need to move the evap line a bit. Other than that no clearance issues.

The silver bit is one of two centering collars for the bar. Will need further adjustment at some point.

The CLK bar I used in my W202 used to walk around a bit. This looked to be a good experiment to try.

Doesn't look like a lot of work, but this is hours of time. The shop I'm using is in disrepair, as it was used for too many projects at once. I had to clear a path to the shop press, and it's not ideal. I have some press accessories, but I don't wish to mix too much of my stuff in with this.

I planned to use the W124 antenna, but it's going to be a chore. The control board in the 190 antenna has some burned areas. I may try to repair it, if I can get the power device heatsinks off I don't have a picture at the moment.

Inside.

I think I may have installed the springs in the wrong positions. Left front is over 1/2" lower than the right.

My 15 year old Amazon Chinese spring compressor finally came close to injuring me. 🫤
Not sure what I'm going to replace it with.
On a lighter note, the wheel skates are from Speedway Motors, and seem to be very good quality. Twice as expensive as the Chinese Amazon units, but worth the money, as well as advertised to made in USA.

Not sure what I'm going to do with the wheels and tires. I don't really like them on the car, and the tires are too big a size.

P Wow it's been a minute. Hope everyone had a good holiday. I accepted a position in the repair department at work. Same game, different problems.😁

If wiring is not your thing, or it triggers you, you might want to shield your eyes.🤣

So far, I have removed the entire SRS harness, and all hardware, the entire alarm system, the cruise control, EZL, and CIS. A few of the wires for control of the CIS will be available to interface with the next ECU.

I'm on the fence regarding installation of the M104. 99X factory engine management. There are several standalone units I've been looking at. The downside is loosing the smooth idle.

I have to wait for the weather to break as I will tie up a good slice of the shop with the tables I will need to lay out the W124 factory harness.

If anyone knows where I can get HFM ECU reflashed to remove the EGR, cold upshift delay, and air injection, please lete know.

Anyhow, a couple of pictures.

All the best with the project!
But I don't understand why you would loose the smooth idle with an standalone ecu?
Its all a matter of the mapping.
My 3.6 idle is not different from stock using an different (larger) eta.
You need to manage your fueling and ignition along with compensation values and once this works start to engage the idle regulation and if wanted lambda closed loop. It's a bit time intense and sometimes you go 1 step forward and three back but that is what a good mapping is all about.

Hello everyone.

Wiring is still a mess, and progress is slow. Just wanted to check in.

If anyone has underhood 190e pictures, specifically the cooling hose routing and the area under the cowl, please post them up. I did not take enough when I disassembled the 190.

The power steering pump has to be swapped, as the output ports are different sizes between the pumps.

I really took a huge bite with this project.

Words of encouragement appreciated...

Edited Post

So last Friday, an older (than me) gentleman drove into the rear of my W124 E320. I haven't talked to the insurance company yet, but I don't think it's going to be good for me. Please post your opinions. Should I look for a clean rust free, but needing work replacement?

Everything has been addressed. Head gasket ($2500 in parts including entire cooling system. LCA's, new Bilstein's, complete steering system. Fuel pumps and filter.

And so much more.

Looking for sound advice.

Sean

I saw your pic.
Hard hit......are you ok...what did the driver say?
Looking at your pic:
Is upper trunk lid creased or are quarter panels affected can't tell from pic?
Does it drive any different?

I was fine! Other driver was a prat. First he told me he didn't know which insurance carrier he had. Then he told me "The General". No correct address on his license.

Car drove absolutely fine afterwards!

Rear decklid destroyed. Right rear bumper area pushed in about four inches. Right rear quarter creased. Door still operated nicely, so it could have been repaired. I would have repaired it, but I found the 190, and decided to chase a dream.

Re other guy ..you took pictures of his d license, license plate, registration, insurance card, and your damage, and his front end at the scene correct?
Insurance follows registered owner Not the Driver........

I did. Mass law states you only need liability insurance to operate in the state. I do understand you view! Just at that time in my life, I did not have the energy to pursue the issue. The 190 presented at just the right moment.

His Liability covered your property damage. 3yrs to file claim think it expired may 22 of 25...so....maybe forget it..anyhow I looked at a 190e 16 valve with rear spoiler, stick shift....was going to buy it but I'm over 6ft and it was too cramped...nice little car though. Anyhow how is your 190e ...close to firing it up soon?

Nice 15 valve cars command a premium. I would love to have one. The car I have had minimal rust, and only one small hole.

Working on fuel and power steering at the moment. Then I'll move back to the wiring. I needed a break from that!

6cyl has more torque less of a sewing machine than 16 valve 4cyl
So you may have one of the largest engines used in a 190e
