W202 C36 AMG With rare options

An imperial red one like @PJmak would have been the bee’s knees for your rare optioned example.

Robert
You are right, I've only seen a couple of unusual colors: Opal red and a kind of bright green. Would love one in Speed Yellow.

The red one I saw I know hes in my neighborhood somewhere. Ive seen it twice before but a while back. Im gonna stalk him one day :D

Plates say "SHRP TOI"

Id love to see it next to my red c43 :). Maybe hell be down to get together and take some pictures. Car seems to be in really good shape.

Update:

1100KM round trip and the C36 Is finally here. Drove it nearly 550KM back, was MUCH more comfortable than the 2021 Puma we drove there with.. can't believe how crappy these cars are, was doing 8.6L/100 at 130km/h.

Back to the 36, this car is Nice! Its a lighter, smaller and simpler AMG than what I am used to. And this simplistic approach really works!
You can see how the W202 is a more modern car compared to the W124, similar to the W210 but slightly simpler than the E-class. The cladding, carpets and interior panels are thinner and road noise is more audible.

The 1st Owner of this car (Sanitation equipment Company director) had it ordered in an unusual setup:
No sunroof
No electric seats
No courtesy lights
No folding mirrors
No illuminated mirrors
No automatic climate control
NO TRACTION CONTROL !

Instead we have some cool options such as:
BOSE Sound system with CD changer (sounds better than my 2014 E63!)
4 Sport seats
Headlight washing system
Carbon look decoration
Stainless steel entry guards

Solid car all original car with no rattles and leaks. Well documented ownership and service history. Matching numbers. Accident free.

Pictures and more details this week, doing my usual diagnosis and evaluation for the car.

Sounds like he wanted the car to be light and fun when he ordered it.

Btw Im not aware of folding mirrors on w202s.

Congrats! Sounds like a great car. Your comments on the W202 AMG are spot on.

My friend had a dark blue green c36 here in California. The only one ive seen in that color.

Sadly the car was totaled.

Diagnostics work complete:
- Wish the 500E had the Bosch ME 2.0 system... waaay easier to diagnose.
- No reoccurring fault codes except the "sporadic gear shift position" due to the shifter bushing.
- There is an Evap leak affecting idle. Already located.
- Last Major service was in 2020. But, I want to flush the ATF and filter.
- Needs new front pads.
- Real solid underbody and wheel wells.

Question for the W202 Gurus @2phast @PJmak @Ntrepid :

1 - What is the part number of the silver frame between the headlight lens and reflector ? Lenses are OE and look great, but that discolored frame is annoying me.
2 - How do you get the side skirts off ?! is there clips/screws under the black

Last edited:
FYI. Side skirts use AMG double sided tape. Not side specific but front and rear specific. Was still available from MB a couple of years ago.

Robert

@Ntrepid is as much of a guru as myself or anyone else on here when it comes to W202s

He is right, C36 used double sided tape while on a c43 that was changed to clips which is still annoying do take off and put together.

Is there something wrong with the skirt? My friend might have a spare, I forget what side it was.

Not sure what part you are talking about on the headlight but check this page. This is on a 97 c280 which should be the same.

@Ntrepid @PJmak You're both right, some kinda velcro tape. I unbolted the 6 screws underneath and the velcro in the front.. but the side skirt is not lifting out! is there push-in fasteners or clips some where else ?

The side skirts are fine, but the right side is not flush with the fender, workshop information says velcro must be properly aligned or side skirt will not fit even.

As for the headlight, please see attached, its non of the parts in the EPC, Its not part of the reflector nor the glass.

As far as I know, side skirts are held in at the bottom and at the top plus the weatherstripping thats between them and the fender.

Pop the headlight lens metal clips and pry the lens off (its not glued in). That piece comes off easy. I used to spray those black and pop them back in. Looks good on a black car. I dont know if u can get that separately but its easy to get it and out. They come either chrome or just plastic finish

Look at the headlights on my old black c43. One pic shows it painted in black.

I'll have to paint them too. the reflectors and lens are in really good shape and OE, can't justify changing everything just for that :/
Ok, now to find out what the original silver paint is called.

Do you have xenons on that car?

Maybe just xenons come with chrome frame inside the headlight and the non xenon are just plastic gray finish.

There are a few variants of the 744 silver so be careful and make sure you get the correct one.

I used to have a 95 silver c36 long ago. As a matter of fact w202 is all I owned until recently :D

95 c280
95 c36
98 c43 obsidian black 5.4 swapped
2000 c280
98 imperial red c43

Brother and sister also had w202s :D

You must remove the black strip of black tape like stuff that hides the top screws for the top of the skirt near the door sill. The tape was outrageously price the last time I checked- something like $40-50....

The velcro btw was not a good choice to secure the side skirts, it almost always lets go after a few washes. I ended up using epoxy to secure the velcro to both the body and the side skirts, never had a problem after that.

They are standard halogens. should be a silver/light grey frame.
Any Idea what silver is on the frames ?

Totally understand. I am used to the bigger cars and this is our first C-class ever. Never owned an SUV/Coupe/Cabrio either.
I came to appreciate the smaller lighter Mercedes in the narrow winding roads of Europe, as well as not being surrounded by oversized SUVs and trucks like in the gulf. The 202 is a real premium compact sedan, unlike the obese-mini cars being produced now.

It looks like you are looking for the rubber gasket around the headlight - I can get the part number as one of mine is still intact. I have not found a supplier for it though.. Maybe you can. I just picked up a 99 C43 with a sunroof but it does not open :(.. Mine is black on black and rust free which is awesome.. I drive it around town as on the highway it is a bit of a handful... doing 80 is a bit of an adventure... My W220 S500 is much more pleasant on the highway.

Id suggest opening the sunroof manually to see if the mechanism works. The car should have come with an allen wrench in the tool kit thats used to open the sunroof manually.

No the rubber gasket you can still buy from M-B. problem with the plastic frames that get sun burned or discolored by the radiating heat from the headlights.

I think this is the only possible solution:
They use heat resistant exhaust paint in silver.

Quite surprised that someone with bed liner on the trim of their mercedes was capable of delivering quality stuff like that ^^

@195910 congratulations Ahmed! I have loved the C36 for many years, unfortunately quite difficult to find here in the UAE otherwise I would have one with me. Couple C43s around but they don't have the charm of the C36.

Still waiting for pictures!

Thanks Bilal, I would not have considered one in the Gulf, but here in Europe you see the advantages of the nimble cars. It looks smaller than those tasteless cheap eco boxes, yet quite spacious from inside except for the rear leg room in the back being less than the W124.

Better in Gulf, Europe is clamping down on these old mercs, soon will not be viable to own and enjoy them as much.

Found another C36 rare color.

New Update:

This is very unusual setup:

M104 ME2.1, the car has no EGR valve and No air pump from factory!
I was shocked at first and thought the whole system was deleted by the previous owner.. turned out it never had them, there are no vacuum hoses nor valves related to emission system.
Also, I suspect an LSD differential as its a non-ASR car with factory AMG 3.07 rear end ratio. the 4-speed C36 had a 2.87 ratio.

Body work is impressive, I pulled both bumpers and the side sills to do preventative rust proofing.

Learning a lot about these underappreciated cars. The 4-speed C36 were not the most exciting to drive, but these 5-speed cars are different. Engine management, transmission, differential, sound system, brake system, complete exhaust, electronics, steering system all differ from the 4-Speed cars.
** covering tape above the side skirt screws is NLA, I made small cuts in the tape to get to the screws**

....
This is part of the reason why the C43's were so much fun, naturally aspirated AMG engine but with an updated 5 speed transmission and supporting electronics...it had a "jumpiness" to it (and great subtle exhaust note) that was different from the early 8 cylinder MB's or AMG's that delivered the torque so early and readily (no long accelerator pedal travel etc.).

And one thing not many know is that the m113 is lighter than the m104 in the c36

My 1995 Non ASR C36 has the same 185mm 3.07 diff as well. It looks like a W124 style diff versus the updated W202 style. I don't believe it is LSD as there are no markings on the diff to indicate that at all.

I think mine has the newer W210 housing, the cover plate is part number A2103511108

Looks great. Got to order the tiny AMG badge for the front bumper!

Robert
First thing I thought off !
But (and just to add to the mystery), the Euro 97 cars did not have them! I check 4 other 97 Euro cars and the EPC shows the part as "not valid for this model", also no rear wing.
What is missing are the 2 "sport" emblems on the fenders.

Changing the brake pedal as well, its an original M-B but the C36 never came with those.
