Who can burn a chip for a 92 ECU?

Search “Mercedes 500E Chip” on eBay, you’ll see one for $70, for sale by member GSXR here. But are you looking for the chip or “software” you can manipulate? Either way, he’s the source for that, BTDT.

Don't plan on any power gain with a chip, but you can eliminate the top speed governor (kinda useless in USA) and the annoying cold-upshift delay for the cats, and slightly increase the rev limiter (not much use except for racing / autocross applications). Any seller claiming power gains will do nothing but lighten your wallet.

Also... no, there is not much else you can do with the chip, other than adjust the fuel mapping for different displacements (i.e., a 5.6L or 6.0L conversion).

Dave, what’s the utility of eliminating the cold start upshift delay? I can imagine the car would just shift as normal, more quickly and without revving as high, which won’t heat up the converters. So I have the emissions logic. Is that it? Is 3rd gear with cold converters not a problem otherwise? Besides learning the answer to a marginal question, I’m wondering why RennTech left the cold start upshift delay (which I rather like, actually) with their eProms back in the day (which I have).

Bottom line - it's strictly an emissions feature, to heat the cats rapidly, particularly at a cold start where the mixture is richer than normal. The cold upshift delay holds 2nd gear (with a stock E500E valvebody) longer than normal, at light throttle. So when you pull out of the driveway right after a cold start and are toodling down your street at 25mph, the engine RPM's hang at like 2500, instead of upshifting to 3rd. It holds this for something like 5-10 seconds, I forget the exact time, and it may vary based on variables the LH module is monitoring. Some folks prefer to keep RPM's lower until the engine is warmer, which is why the chip modification is a nice solution.
