Question for you: I currently have Lorinser tips and the previous owner cut into the bumper. Is it possible to install the Lorinser tips on yours? That way I can avoid replacing the rear bumper or having an unsightly cutout.

Can i do it for you NO

It will require extensive modification to make those tips work it's not as easy as chopping off my tips and welding those on.

Muffler angle and hight are different between the brabus and turn down style tips. The flange angle and bracket on the rear muffler body are not welded onto the same location.

The other issue is that the brabus style muffler will hang too low and the lorenser tips will have a bigger gap than what you currently have. A skilled shop would have to cut the rear pipe at the muffler, the existing tips, and the bracket thats on the muffler in order to position the canister in the right spot for the tips to line up.

The turn down style muffler won't even stand a chance in adapting those tips due to the location of the muffler body.

There is no real way to do a clean job adapting those tips it's going to look messy a muffler shop would have to do several pie cuts and tig weld them to get the correct angle which will cost you $$$$.

If you like i can supply the brabus style exhaust with out tips and you can find someone local to finish the job for you.

Cost of the rear cat back section w/o tips $1500.00

I forgot to mention....

the pipes on the loresner tips are probably 55mm 2.165, the outlet holes on the brabus tip can is 2.5" and the one for the turn down is 2.25" so the pipe going from the muffler body to the chrome tip would need to be replaced.

makemann, the other option would be to have the notch filled on the bumper. Not easy though.

You can bend it slightly but the adjustments by bending it is +/- 5mm at most.
Any more then it starts to pull on the rubber donut to a point where I can slip off.

Sorry guys i got side tracked with some Aston and BMW projects and let this one slide...

So i did pre-order material to build the following
5 turndown
5 brabus
5 front sections w/o catalysts
enough material to build 5 catalysts.


right now production time is 6-8 weeks before delivery, the next free slot to begin production will be 6-28-2019. Estimated completion date will be the week of Aug 5, 2019.

Yes it will work

It’s designed to work with the factory exhaust the only concern is the OE connection where the resonator and catalyst meet. Your factory resonator pipe might get damaged during removal so a muffler shop might need to fab something up.

Thanks for the reply. Are you suggesting that the OE resonator pipe might get damaged upon removal from the factory resonator because:

1) The DESIGN of the OE resonator pipe is such that removal is impossible w/o damage? OR
2) Because often times the OE resonator pipe has lots of corrosion?

If it is #2, then I am comfortable. If it is #1, then hmmmm. FWIW, my OE resonator pipe broke about 3000 miles ago (Dec 2016) when I tried to remove it. I replaced it with a new OE resonator (see pics) and have subsequently put 3000 miles on it --- no inclement weather whatsoever.

If the pipes have not been separated in decades. they can be a complete [CENSORED] to separate. Terrible job on a lift, can't imagine trying without a lift. In one case I actually broke off the pipe (on the catalyst side) and had to extract it from the resonator, then have a shop weld the broken piece back on. This was on a 400E but they share the same cat pipe and resonator connections. Pics attached of the carnage.

Your photos show breakage at the resonator side, which is easily fixable via welding. But anyway, since yours has been apart recently, and they are shiny new components, it should be a breeze to disassemble. Tip for installation... use a wire brush on a drill to ream out the larger/female pipe on the resonator side, use a new graphite ring seal, and apply anti-seize liberally inside (past the graphite seal). This should prevent the corrosion that seizes the pipes together.

GOTCHA Thanks. Yeah, my cat pipe works just fine and the cat works fine. Just that there is surface corrosion and the heat shield on the cat is really rusty/crunchy. The resonator and muffler are all new, so I want the rest of the exhaust system to be all new. At some point when I get the motivation, I would like to remove the the front half of the exhaust / cat pipe / 2 exhaust manifolds and pretty-up everything there (perhaps ceramic coating) and reinstall.

This would be after I do the thing with the Jehnerts.

we are finalizing the production run, i wanted to know if you will be ordering a front section with Catalytic converters? The catalytic converter sections are built to order with a 5-7 day lead time. I try not to stock them due to Cost of the catalytic converters.

Just a note ---- (after talking with 5thscaleracer about this) ---
I will paraphrase 5thscaleracer's words (I learned something from him!)

It makes no difference the way the arrows on the catalytic converter are pointed.
The reason why is because the company that 5thscaleracer sources the cats from uses universal shields, and those universal shields have arrows stamped in them for TWO WAY cats, in which flow is directional --- this is because two way cats use two filter media stages and they are different. One filter media stage needs to be first, and the other media stage needs to be second.

However, the w124.036 uses a THREE WAY cat, and in a three way cat, the first and third filter medias are identical, whereas the middle section media is different. Since a three way cat is symmetrical w.r.t. the media, the flow direction doesn't matter.

Some Clarification needed....

So if you look at the image below the catalytic converters may appear to have been welded in the wrong direction.

On this specific catalytic converter that we are using the heat shield flow designation is not important due to the type of Catalyst. The heat shields are universal and they are used on different models.

Two Way catalytic converters have a specific inlet and outlet, Heavy Metal three way catalytic converters do not have a specific in/out.

So yes my welder didn't pay attention to the direction of the arrow but it will not cause any performance issues.

- Reduce Weight
- Improve durability by using stainless including the welds.
- Increase flow
- Alter exhaust sound to give it a nice V8 tone with out the drone (cat back option)
- Increase clearance from road to the under side of the car (for the guys that are "hella dumpped")

The front section was a complete redesign
- improved resonance and exhaust flow
- Larger primary and secondary pipe size.
- the 2-1 collector has a 15* taper for a smoother flow
- Utilized a heavy duty flange to control pipe expansion at the catalyst section going from 3" to 2.25" twin pipes.
- The catalytic converters I offer flow the same amount of CFM as the stock it's the only type that will pass the 50 state emissions law.
- Test pipes are available
- Race cats are an option my jigs are made to accommodate HJS race catalytic converters.

That all sounds pretty neat. Makes me wish I'd seen the thread earlier and placed an order of my own. Question, though -- Doesn't all this change the breathing such that adjustments to timing/fuel must be made?

Not necessarily, since the 500e is fuel injected and referenced by an 02 sensor fuel corrections are made automatically.

The corrections might not be quick enough since it’s not referencing a wideband. But the system will adjust accordingly.

The 500e runs pretty stout during acceleration enrichment. Especially when hitting peak torque. The afr starts to lean out when it’s on partial throttle or steady speeds like maintaining 60mph on the highway.

The advantage of any exhaust is mainly during acceleration.

This applies to any fuel injected car using a hot film MAF.

FYI:
The only spare kits I have are catback units with Brabus style tips.

There are 3 available.

So... just for shits a giggles I decided to order all of the OE hardware to see the cost and if I can source the bits locally to save some $$$$

All in for the nuts, bolts, seals, rubbers etc... $182.30 the nuts and bolts better have a MB star stamped on them for that price.

$182 sounds way high for the stock exhaust system bolts & rubber hangers, even at MSRP. I expect probably half that amount is the rubber hangers, seals, and gaskets. The bolts are standard items, nothing special. I've replaced all the bolts on most of my cars and it wasn't expensive.

most was the rubber mounts, seals, the little bracket that sits next to the front pipe that bolts to the trans holder.

Im sure once i get all the hardware i can spec out the sizes and run to my local fastener supplier.

Originally i had posted a hold date up to 10-1-2019 thinking I would get a response form you in 7-10 days and giving you some time to round up the $$$. The date is being changed..

I would like to get a verbal response by 9-5-2019 to get an idea of what to do. If i don't hear from you by 9-5-2019 then the exhaust goes to the next person on the list.

I can empathize --- for vendors it is annoying when people express interest in your project only to become difficult to reach when it comes time to consummate the transaction, and I wanted to thank you for your time and effort.

@Eno Hopefully someone can assist with the video because I don’t own a 500e and or don’t have access to one anymore.

But the front section I supply does not add a whole lot of sound because the factory resonator reduces about 70% of the noise.

The construction of the resonator is a big ceramic brick which is why the part alone weighs about 18lbs new.

My version front section matched with the stock resonator/muffler will give you a nicer crisper throttle response due to the better flow. But at high speed once the resonator becomes a restriction that’s when it all starts to slow down.


So to be honest if your running a stock resonator and muffler having a video is irrelevant.

Guys buying the front section are doing it to either replace a broken part or to preserve the OE part for the long haul. Not so much as a performance/sound enhancement.
