Headlight bulbs

Thanks for taking the time to post this information, Dave. I see a lot of people steering away from stock bulbs and I’m curious: Is it mostly because the original reflective material in the lamp frames loses its effectiveness over the years and brighter bulbs like the ones you posted are just getting us back to when the car was new? Or have most people just become accustomed to brighter lights?

Good questions. I think in some (possibly many) cases, the reflectors have lost their shine and light output is reduced somewhat - and most people likely have no idea of the root cause. However even new lights with stock bulbs were not great by modern standards. And yes, I think once people drive a newer car with modern bi-Xenon or LED lights, those make the old halogens look even weaker.

Fortunately, the current H4 bulbs available offer the ability to improve night visibility with our old halogen reflector lamp assemblies. It's a bit of a challenge to get brighter bulbs that won't glare into oncoming traffic - this is mostly with budget LED's though. The top-shelf halogens (like the Philips I linked to) work great, the drawback is cost and shorter lifespan.
