HOW-TO: Replacing 500E/E500 climate control air sampler ("asipirator") motor

The aspirator fan will be behind/below the vent near the door; the vacuum manifold is just to the left of the glovebox and slightly below (may be partially hidden behind the edge of the center console). You really need to take out the airbag (or glovebox, some 1992 non-V-8 cars had bags, others kept the glove boxes) and listen very closely/carefully to the source of the clicking.
 
Thanks for the detailed instructions. I'll have the same job comming up. No vacuum suction.

On a separate note, it seems that the motor is only installed on cars that have a sun-roof. Not sure how many were imported to the US without sunroof.
 
None. ALL E500E models imported to the US by MBNA had sunroofs.

I don't think that the presence of a sunroof is the gating factor -- rather (and I could be wrong on this) I believe it would be whether the car was spec'd from the factory with ACC (Automatic Climate Control) - again, which all MBNA and MB Canada cars had. And likely most MB Japan cars too.

This is because the aspirator motor sucked in cabin air to determine temperature, and then sent a signal to the ACC system to maintain the "set" temperature and fan speed at the temp thumbwheel and the "mode" on the panel. Non-ACC systems used separate temperature and fan controls, which didn't require this "automatic" constant temp-sensing feedback loop.
