The $400 400E

You mean the formed-fabric battery cover on the .034 trunk? Gotta be one out there somewhere... need to find one in a junkyard, or a 400E being parted out.
That's the one. I've never even seen one. Not entirely sure what it looks like. But yeah, I'm sure there's one out there somewhere. Just need to find it.

I have two of these as well. Per our previous conversation, I'm sorry I did not get one out to you. I have grown weary of shipping costs and hunting for exact box sizes. I just shipped two headlight lenses to another member and the cost was $98.00, so I split it with him. It took me about an hour to pack. I had a medical procedure concurrent with your inquiry as well. I just wanted to make a public apology.

Thank you northNH for your offer and effort.

Think nothing of it. It's just some used car parts. No big deal. If you still have that console roll top I might want to get that from you when you time. No rush.

Amazingly mboemparts.com had the side panel in stock for like $19, and with the discount code I got free shipping. Can't beat that.
Eeeek. Don't get too excited until the order is confirmed and ships:

If the price is abnormally low, that's also a bad sign... it's typically either a fire sale to dump remaining inventory just prior to NLA, or it's NLA.

:duck:

Both the driver & passenger side panels, both versions of each (for 70L gas tanks), are showing NLA on MB Classic Germany... always good to check there first. If MBCC shows NLA, the chances of finding a leftover part on a USA shelf is slim to none.

Only one of the four shows "Discontinued" on RevParts, which means nobody has ordered the other three since they went NLA:

If your order dropped below $100 without this item, you may get charged shipping... might want to come up with a substitute item to keep free shipping, could be a "free item" vs paying for S&H:

That's a good idea. It would drop below $100. I'll see what I can find. Any V8-specific stuff anyone would suggest?

There's all sorts of stuff that is good to replace as preventive maintenance... depends what you have already done, or that a PO has done. Also depends if you are looking for a lower-dollar item or not. Have you replaced the rubber power steering S-hose yet, 124-466-32-81? If original, it's on borrowed time... need valve cover gaskets? Etc.

I swapped the power steering return hose with a better used one out of a 95. A brand new one might be a good idea. Valve cover gaskets look ok, and since I plan to swap in the 5.0, I probably won't worry about them on the 4.2 anyway. At some point I need to source all the splash shields and motor mount cooling ducts for the lower engine compartment. It's pretty much all missing on this car. I don't think any of that is available new though.

I was thinking of the valve cover gaskets for the 5.0 which will almost certainly need them... along with the chain rails, PCV hoses...

I think the main cooling ducts for the engine mounts are NLA (can't remember, check MBCC site). You can get those from a junkyard 034 but it's typically a nasty, dirty job as they are covered in oily grime.

:spend:

Yeah, I'm not going to buy any parts for the 5.0 until I've had a chance to yank and disassemble it. It need head gaskets for sure. The only .034 I know of in a local yard is at Crossroads Towing in Nampa, but it's missing pretty much all the ductwork as I recall.

Hello all.. I just read this thread while looking on why my fans won't come at low speed when ac is on... And I found that my 15a fuse was blown too.
Can I put a 30a or does it have to be 15a??
Anyway, I need to buy fuses tomorrow.. Lol
Thank you in advance

Also, fans work on high speed.. So, could it also be the relay as it is a stage 2?

The main strip fuse for the fans is 30 amps, so you already have 30 amps of protection on the circuit. Putting a 30 amp fuse in the auxiliary fuse holder would defeat the purpose of having an auxiliary fuse. You want to run a 15 amp fuse so that if the low speed circuit sees more than 15 amps, which it should NOT during regular operation, the fuse will pop instead of potentially overheating and damaging other components or wires in that circuit.

Try another 15A. If it blows again, it's best to check what's causing it to blow... I'd be nervous even with a 20A fuse installed. Often it's high resistance / damaged wires at the resistor below/behind the driver headlight.

High speed fans don't go through the 15A fuse. Those are only protected by the 30A strip fuse.

So I put a new 15a fuse.. Seems to be working again so far.

Good to hear.

It's still a good idea to have a look at the condition of the wires and resistor just behind the left headlight like GSXR suggested. There's a good chance that the black/violet wire that runs between the upper terminal of that resistor and the 15 amp fuse is pretty crispy, probably right near the resistor. Take a look at that wire and repair if needed. Make sure to use high quality repair materials and make sure any replacement wire you might use is the same gauge or larger.

Ok, looking for opinions. Stumbled across a set of these wheels at the pick n pull today. Should be cheap, but they'll need refurbished. 16 inch w210 wheels. I think they're from a 98 E430. I'm wanting something like a monoblock sort of look, but don't want to break the bank, and I'd like something relatively lightweight. I know those 3 things don't really go together, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on how these would fit/look/perform on my 400E. They're PN 2104010402.

Those are from the 210.072 (E420), and may have been used on early E430 as well? I have a couple sets of them. 16x7.5 ET41 and they fit fine on the W124, just don't go crazy with tire size. At a tick over 20 lbs, they are relatively light weight, compared to similar sizes (excluding the C208 flyweight forged).

Sample below, more pics here.

The other option I've been considering is the C36 wheels.

This site has them listed for $220 each with free shipping. Seems like a great price. I certainly like the look of them better than the 16 inch E420 wheels, but I know they're definitely heavier.

I haven't had a set of wheels refurbished in probably 15 years, but if I had to guess I'd assume the purchase price and cost to refurbish those 16s would likely be pretty close to the purchase price of the C36 wheels. So then it's just a matter of weight vs looks...

So many choices...

$220 for the C36 fronts seems CHEAP! They are quite porky for the size though... 27 lbs each. (!!!)

I'd contact FLW and see how many of the C36 wheels they have available. Their site let me put 100 wheels in the cart and begin checkout for $22k, so clearly their site doesn't show actual inventory.

Good idea. And yeah, it seemed really cheap for C36 wheels. They have fronts and rears at the same price. Maybe I'll just order a set and see what happens. I love the style, and realistically the car is no lightweight anyway.

I think I'll leave the decision to my wife. If she grants me permission to order them I'll do it. If not, I'll think about it for a while and then maybe order them anyway. 😁

Did a bit of reading on FLW. Sounds like they are a refurbisher. They get OEM wheels and refurbish them and sell them. Some people have had good experiences. Many people have been told the wheels they ordered are not in stock. A few have had issues with wheels not running true. Maybe I won't just order them and find out. I mean, American Express would cover me if there was a problem, but I don't really want that hassle. @gsxr do you have any wheels you're looking to sell?

Better to ask first before ordering. I really don't like sites that list stuff for sale they don't have in stock. eCommerce 101 stuff.

I only have those 19" wheels for sale at the moment... and they are pretty heavy for a 4.2L!

:burnout:

Well, I'll hopefully have 5 liters at some point, but those 19s would be too wide for my skinny fenders anyway.

I messaged FLW and asked if they have them in stock. We'll see what they say.

I also encountered a 95 S500 at the pick n pull today. With my S500 having a leaking head gasket, I'm tempted to preemptively pull the cylinder head off that car. Alternatively, I could just pull the whole engine. Factoring in the cost, time, and parts expense of going through my S500 engine, I might be better off just grabbing the whole 95 engine and just using that. Granted, I can't hear it run first, but I bet it doesn't have a bad head gasket.

Oooo. If you can get the S500 engine that would be sweet. And it's relatively cheap, you just need to invest the half-day labor (or more) to yank it. The transmission may be worth getting as well, if the fluid doesn't look like chocolate syrup. The EZL, LH module, and BM/GM are also useful if nobody has snagged those yet.

EZL is already gone. That was the first thing I was going to grab.

Unfortunately I'm having surgery in a couple days, and then I have to recover for a bit before I'll be allowed to put that kind of physical labor in on such things. Maybe if it's still there in a few weeks.

I got a set of these cheap to replace my 15" stock wheels. I really like them. No rubbing with 215/55x16 tires.

I did look at the resistor.. It actually looks great!!

Awesome! Was the transmission any good? They are identical between 500E and S500.

I don't know. I do know it had 94 S420 written on it in paint pen though, so it clearly wasn't original to that car. If you want it it's sitting on the ground in front of the 95 S500 at Jalopy Jungle in Nampa. Ready to go.

What's a good price for a set of CLK lightweight wheels? I just stumbled on a decent set for $300. I'm sure that's a fine price if I intend to keep them. I'm just not sure if that's what I'll want to run on my car, so wondering if I should just snag them and potentially flip them if I don't use them myself.

If they aren't in terrible shape, $300 for a set is STUPID CHEAP. Decent condition sets are 2x-3x that much. Really nice sets are typically over $1k.

Pics of these wheels on the 034 here, sample below.

Well, since I just had surgery I'm not allowed to drive anywhere or lift anything. I guess it's my lucky day because the seller was willing to deliver. $250 delivered to my garage. They're dirty, but not curb rashed or anything. I'll get the garbage tires off and clean them up we'll and see what I really have.
