FYI Group Buy: Lamin-X Headlight + Fog Light covers, 12-mil

I am now SOLD OUT of Lamin-X. If there is further interest in any group buy activity, please let me know via PM.

It seems there is continuing interest and demand for Lamin-X by forum members, so I am going to place an order for another roll of Lamin-X. I will be able to fulfill orders once this is received. I am only going to get a smaller (30-foot) roll, but this will be enough for quite a few sets for those needing them.

More news in the near future as I have it.

Cheers,
Gerry

I am ordering today a new shipment of Lamin-X, in the 12-mil thickness.

Lamin-X's prices have gone up, so I've had to raise my price modestly. All orders will ship in a cardboard tube, together with pre-cut pre-facelift and/or facelift, and fog-lamp, templates.

The amount I'm ordering will cover approximately 5 cars.

PRICING:
  • Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors only -- $30 postpaid in the US, per set
  • Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors + fogs -- $35 postpaid in the US, per set
  • Set of Lamin-X fog-lamp protectors only -- $10 postpaid in the US, per set
Please let me know if you are interested, either here or via conversation.

I expect to be able to start shipping before the end of April May.

Lamin-X is charging around 50% more than I am, for the same product. My prices are shipping-inclusive.

Better late than never.... Just finished installing the Lamin-X on my now unobtanium Euro headlights. We are blessed to have flat headlights, this must be the easiest Lamin-X install of any car anywhere! And most importantly, it's virtually invisible, so those Euros are still spiffy-fresh looking to the fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of humanity who might appreciate it! Thanks Gerry.

Hi Gerry.
I would like to receive a pre-facelift set (Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors + fogs) , but i d'ont living in US.
How much is it for me ?

I do have a set available.

If you send me a PM with your mailing address, I will send a set off to you on Monday and let you know the exact total. I expect it will be approximately USD $55-60 with postage included. Are you OK with that?

OK, three sets of Lamin-X are getting mailed out today. I may have enough material left for one more set, if anyone needs them.

:update:

I have a brand-new shipment of Lamin-X in stock. 12-mil thickness.

Costs are the same as before.

  • Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors + fogs -- $35 postpaid in the US, per set

I just installed a Lamin-X on my (modestly pitted) E500 Euro headlight. It was out of the car, so it seemed the opportune time to install the Lamin-X.

You will need the following items:
  • A large enough work-space / work-bench (if doing it with the headlight out of the car)
  • X-acto or other sharp knife
  • Pair of clean disposable gloves
  • Cardboard box, flattened
  • Credit card
  • Windex or other window cleaner, and a rag
  • Kitchen knife or other knife with a sharp tip
  • Optional: Scotch tape
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:

What I did was to tape one end of the Lamin-X into position at one end of the headlamp. A few small/short pieces of Scotch tape every 3-4 inches will help hold it in place.

Put the gloves on, to keep your dirty/oily hands from fouling the clear Lamin-X as you handle it.

Trace the headlight pattern onto the back of the Lamin-X, then cut it out with the X-acto knife, using the flattened cardboard box as a pad.

Clean the headlight lens thoroughly with the Windex and a cleaning rag. Two or three times with Windex per lens is even better.

Lift up the un-taped part of the Lamin-X (should be around 2/3 of the length of it, and tear about 2/3 of the paper off of the underside of it.

Starting at the part where you tore the paper off, and using your credit card to push out air pockets, SLOWLY and EVENLY push the Lamin-X down along the height of the headlight, working about 1/2 inch at a time. Your goal is to keep air bubbles from forming.

Slowly work to the end of the Lamin-X. If you see an air bubble, carefully lift the Lamin-X a bit to expose it, and use the credit card to push it out.

Once you have reached the end of the Lamin-X, use your fingertips to push down the perimeter/edge of the Lamin-X to the edge of the glass lens. Go around it at least two or three times, slowly pushing the edge of the Lamin-X down.

Next, remove the pieces of tape that are holding the other end of the Lamin-X in position on the headlight lens. Use the point of your X-acto or a kitchen knife to lift up the Scotch tape pieces, and set them aside.

Lift up the un-adhered end of the Lamin-X to the point where you had ripped the backing paper. Remove the backing paper from the 1/3 of the Lamin-X that it is covering.

Repeat the process of using the credit card to SLOWLY press out air bubbles while working along the Lamin-X. Work along until the un-adhered edge is fully adhered.

Run your finger around the edge of the newly adhered Lamin-X two or three times, to ensure that it is sticking to the lens.

Check the Lamin-X carefully for air bubbles. You should have a very very minimal number of air bubbles, and very small ones, if you did the process correctly and slowly with the credit card. If you have any larger bubbles, you can create a "micro-puncture" in the bubble with the sharp tip of your X-acto knife, and press out the air from the puncture you made.

Give the installation one more visual once-over for quality control. Then you have one more headlight to do.

Enjoy!

:bump:

Wanted to bump this thread, to remind people (particularly if you have a new set or an existing set of "Euro" headlight lenses on your 500E or E500, that Lamin-X is the very best way to protect them, and takes all of 30 minutes to install.

I am selling sets, per pricing above, at significantly reduced prices from Lamin-X themselves, yet using their own material. All sets come with templates for headlights (and if you specify, foglights). I also have headlight sets avaialble for 560SEC "Euro" headlight lenses.

:bump:

I still have plenty of Lamin-X avaialble for anyone needing it. If you have pre-facelift or facelift (or 1994-1995 US) Euro lamps/lenses, Lamin-X is a no-brainer to protect your lenses, because the current going price for replacement lenses here on the forum is $2,000+ !!

Sent a couple of sets of Lamin-X out in recent days. Just got a new shipment of mailing tubes to send more out. Have about 4-5 sets of Lamin-X available right now to ship out.

If you have 1991-1995 Euro or 1994-1995 W124 US headlights, do yourself a favor and protect them with some Lamin-X. I offer a great deal as compared with Lamin-X, and include templates for foglamps, pre-facelift and facelift models.

C126 Euro model templates also available, if you are an SEC owner with Yurro lights.

I have enough Lamin-X for ONE SET for either W124 or C126, and ONE mailing tube left, if anyone needs some.

No plans to acquire any more Lamin-X for a while after this.

Just as a final note to close this off. As with the MB Data Card reproductions, I will NO LONGER be making any further sales of Lamin-X in the future. No exceptions.

Thanks to everyone for their patronage for the Lamin-X. Of course, Lamin-X is still available for order directly from the company, and perhaps another member of the 500Eboard will step in to take my place in selling it in the future to our members.

Thanks and regards,
Gerry

My 12/03/20 postmarked tube arrived today. Ballots were harvested with more detail than the mail handling of the tube after Gerry did his part. Thanks Gerry, I never lost faith!

I’d take a facelift set and 1 set for the fogs, if there’s still space on the list. 👍🏻

Edit: I just saw that the list is closed. No worries. 😅

@gerryvz does this mean that those of use who were lucky enough to receive a GVZ manufactured set should hoard them for posterity as their value has just gone up to Euro 5000.00 due to them becoming NLA from GVZ?

Nope. It means that folks are on their own and can pay $50+shipping for their own sets from Lamin-X :)

There's nothing special about the Lamin-X that I sold -- I just bought it in bulk rolls and passed the savings on to folks as a courtesy. Remember too that the mailing tubes ($20+ a dozen) and shipping tape cost money....all costs that I paid for. I didn't make really any money on the Lamin-X.

It was more a courtesy to members here.

Until it became obvious that it wasn't.

I have a new shipment of Lamin-X coming. Mainly, I ordered this for myself, for my 560SEC, and to have an extra spare set of Lamin-X for the spare sets of lenses in my parts archive for my E500 and 560SEC).

So, I will sell the extra Lamin-X, which will be a set or two of headlights + fogs.

Due to the economy and inflation, Lamin-X has raised their costs slightly, and US Priority Mail postage costs have gone up, as well as the cost from Amazon for the mailing tubes. So, I am raising the price for each option by $5.00.

Gerry I'll take a set for pre-facelift lamps and fogs. How do you ship - tube? What size it is? I could possibly have it sent to my friend in TX if tube is small...

OK, I'll definitely have to place a second order for more Lamin-X. This should provide room for a couple more people if others are interested. Existing orders will be going out on Monday next week.

:update: second batch of Lamin-X has been ordered.

It is a 12-inch mailing tube, 2 inches in diameter. Easy to send to your friend (postage is about $8.00, included in the price), or I can send directly to you, but postage will be about $20 extra because of overseas. Your choice.

I'll take a set of Fogs and headlamps for a pre-Facelift euro lense set.

I'd like to take a set for facelift + pre facelift + foglight if possible.
Please send me PM with the following information:

- What you want -- full set or headlights only, or fogs only
- What your car year is -- facelift or pre-facelift
- Your mailing address

Please remit paypal payment to me at gerry@vanzandt.us

For shipment overseas @jnes, the price will be x2 sets (if I read what you are saying correctly - you want a full set each for facelift and pre-facelift cars). But you will only have to pay shipping for one set. Due to the international shipment, please add USD $20 onto the final cost for shipping.

I have now NINE ORDERS that will be shipping, so I will provide an update about how much more I can sell on Monday. Likely only enough for 1-2 more buyers.

OK, @darek_u @dionphaneuf @jnes -- I am ready to take your orders and have enough material and mailing tubes to cover them.

First batch of Lamin-X is already fully GONE and SOLD.

As I mentioned, there are OTHERS in line behind you, so if I don't hear from you in the next couple of days, I will move on to the people further down the line.

My Paypal is above. Please provide via PM the information I requested above.

The first tubes are going to the post office today, and will go out in Monday's mail.

Hi Gerry,
To make cutting out the shapes in the Laminex material. You can send your templates to a laser shop that makes Steel Rule Dies (a piece of plywood about 1/2 inch thick with the shape laser cut into the plywood and a sharpened band of steel knife blade set into the groove cut by the laser). You just lay the laminex material out onto a sheet of smooth wood like plywood and place the steep rule die on the material and stand on it to cut the laminex in one shot. In production where the quantity of parts you want to stamp is too much to use the stand on it method a machine called a clicker press is used to stamp out the shapes. The steel rule dies create the exact same shape every hit. This is probably how Laminex stamps out the precut versions they sell. Very safe, each part takes only seconds to make and no slip of an exacto knife trying to follow the flat template and the parts come out with clean edges. I use these dies to make gaskets for customer jobs at my machine shop. The people we use to make the dies are Terrene Engineering Laser Cutting, Laser Engraving, Die Cutting & More • Terrene, Inc. They are in Mukilteo Wa. and I simply email them the template shape or a cad drawing of the shape I need the die to cut and they send me sa die. price is typically about $100 - 250 for a die depending on the size and complexity. The Headlight shape is pretty simple and I wouldn't expect to pay much more than $100 for a die. I am pretty sure one shape can cut out the right & left light cover. and it will save you hours of cutting with an exacto knife.

Cheers,
Boxersix

I send people the proper and correct fitting templates and the material. They are responsible for cutting their own out.

Once you trace the templates I send onto the back of the lamin-X, which takes about 60 seconds per side, you then cut out with an X-acto knife or sharp scissors. That takes about 1 minute per side. For the fog lamps, maybe 30 seconds each.

This is more of a courtesy to people because I developed the templates for 126 and facelift 124 Euro lamps, and re-used actual Lamin-X Pre-facelift euro lamp shapes, and not a business for me.

Therefore, I have no desire to sink money into creating dies and such.

I already front over $100 a month of my own money to keep this forum running (and also now about $20-25 a month for the 126board.com as well), and don’t ask (and never have) for a single dime to help defray costs.

FIVE more orders going out today, and one order going out on Wednesday.

I will purchase more Lamin-X (a 30-foot roll this time) as well as more mailing tubes, as I am totally cleaned out of everything now.

If anyone else needs a set of Lamin-X, please let me know via PM.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased, I think I have sold ~15 sets in the past 10 days or so.

Thanks
Gerry

:update:

I just ordered a third roll of Lamin-X, twice the amount that I had previously ordered, to fulfill all future orders needed.

I have a huge roll of Lamin-X in stock, along with a dozen mailing tubes. So, if anyone is interested in Lamin-X, it is certainly available.

Sent two orders out this weekend, one overseas to Finland.

If you have Euro lenses and aren’t protecting them with Lamin-X, you are tempting fate. These genuine BOSCH and Hella Euro lenses are getting near unobtanium. Spend $40 now or hundreds or $1,000+ for a new lens later !!

:bump:

Just a bump on this thread -- I still have Lamin-X for E500E "Euro" headlights (pre and post-facelift) as well as fog lamps.

Highly recommended to protect your precious glass lenses !!

Due to the economy and inflation, Lamin-X has raised their costs slightly, and US Priority Mail postage costs have gone up, as well as the cost from Amazon for the mailing tubes. So, I am raising the price for each option by $3.00.

All W124 kits (and W126 kits) come with appropriate headlight lens and foglight lens templates.

PRICING:
  • Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors only -- $38 postpaid in the US, per set
  • Set of Lamin-X headlamp protectors + fogs -- $43 postpaid in the US, per set
  • Set of Lamin-X fog-lamp protectors only -- $13 postpaid in the US, per set
Compare with prices for same from Lamin-X:
  • Headlamp protectors only -- $48 + shipping (typically this will be pushing $55-60)
  • Headlamp protectors + fogs -- $58 + shipping (typically this will be pushing $63-70)
