New front fenders are here😀
But I can not fit bumpers and a hood in the trunk. Plan B is to buy them at the MB-dealership next to the paintshop once the car gets painted...
And a friend might sell me a set of AMG-wheels he had on his W203. Not sure which ones he has but 17" AMG Monoblock 1 or 2 could look good too🤔

The catalytic converter arrived yesterday. 😀
I decided to not unpack it by now and store it as is because the packing comes handy for the storage. So no more pictures at the moment, sorry @TimL

MKB would make me a streetlegal custom exhaust, but needs the car at their workshop to get things done and entered. This would need to wait until the rest is done. Now I need to decide if to use a Fox exhaust or a MKB one🤔

No updates on the E420 so far, but I have an other "new" car coming this weekend:

A 1993 W124 in paint 199 with black fabric interior (very good condition), a manual gearbox and 280000km/175000miles

Headgasket, clutch and some other things were already changed a while ago.
The car run most of its life in Southern Italy and was imported to Germany in 2010. So it has only little rust.😀

It needs MOT, new brakes and brake fluid, new headlights and a new service. Sooner or later I need a new muffler too and probably some other things...

But the car came with LOTS of W124 parts, so all in all was only about 1500 Euros if you subtract the part values. I can not even fit all parts in the wagons trunk 😂

I was looking for a W202 or W203 wagon, but could not pass a W124 wagon with less rust than most W202s around here for the same money as a good W202 C180 sedan.

The plan is to use this one as a daily driver from autumn on!
Not a rocket, but a solid car and M111 parts are plenty and often dirt cheap!

Uh oh.... is there a continental version of @JC220 in the making here?!?
Sorry to disappoint you with that!

As much as I highly appreciate @JC220 doing superb work (and collecting every little spare part he can get his hands on😂), I neither have the time or the money for two huge projects right now!

I even struggle to make progress with the E420 like I want to, because I have not enough time

That one is a daily driver, but of course needed work is done and small things will be improved time by time.
One "big" project is more than enough right now.

Sounds like a cool project! Please share pics of the new addition!

I have a 2.2 m111 124 coupe and a spare 2.3 eaton supercharged m111 in my garage loft (You can see where I will head with that one :pc1: )

The m111 is a reliable engine for sure and if yours has the head gasket etc done should be good!

What were the spare parts that came with?

What do you mean? We already more or less have one. He goes by the name "@lowman". One of the growing hordes of what I call "Crazy Norgers" here on the forum. Arnt was the first, the trailblazer. We use ApplePay. They use MorePay......

:arnt:

Swedes too, particularly of the Taxi Driver and Ms. V-Max variety. :rogerific:

No pictures so far, but as soon as I have any!

Funny you mention that! I have the same engine as spare sitting around too, with only 12000km on it.
It initially was intended as spare for the SLK (got the engine and other parts for a very good price and could not resist😂), but am very tempted to tune it up a bit and put it in a 190E with manual 5-speed.:3gears:

What stopped me so far (other than time and money 😂) is that I do not now how to connect that engine electronics (inkl. CAN-bus) with a 190E.
I look foreward to you doing that swap and I am sure you come up with very good solutions for that!🍿

Of course, as many of you can guess, about no change to get that one registered with a historic plate but worth it I guess!

I am not even sure what spare parts I got right now. Need to go through them all first!:
But at least one headlight (hopefully the correct site and brand to replace the broken one on the 420), some very good looking interior wood panels (at least the two from the center console), a 2nd dashboard unit (but with broken kilometer counter and outside temprature display) whole door window mechanisms, some good looking door handles (the chrome ones and at least 4 of them), some locking mechanism and central locking parts, a 2nd set of wheels (steel ones with old winter tires plus matching hubcaps), a new catalytic converter, some suspension parts and even more...

Gasp! I did not mean to disrespect the @lowman! Perhaps it was his geographic location so far to the north that led me to type out this egregious error!

@744Brillantsilber Glad to hear you are 'attempting' to keep your sanity. In the car world, the deep end creeps up quickly! Aint that right @JC220?

@744Brillantsilber Glad to hear you are 'attempting' to keep your sanity. In the car world, the deep end creeps up quickly! Aint that right @JC220?
Yeah, you are absolutely right! The E420 was intended to have a few little fixes but goes more and more towards a full restoration.
The way I know me, "attempting" may be the correct word😂. But since the buying price was a bit under the budget I set for a daily driver, a few repairs shoud be fine...

Agree on @lowman and @JC220: These two are on a complete different level for sure!!

The wagon is here.
Needs a little work, but I love it!

Already ordered a set of Magneti Marelli headlights. Need a new exhaust too, at least the rear muffler. Probably get an Eberspächer one.
Some little rust parts (very little for a W124 in Germany), worn rubber parts...

First I plan on doing the exhaust, headlights plus a full service and get TÜV done to get it streetlegal.

Tires are a bit worn too. I am debating if to leave the aluminium wheels for summer tires the steel ones for winter or to use the aluminium ones for winter and get a refurbished set of aluminium wheels for summer tires...

And it has a JVC radio in it. It does the job, but looks totally out of place! I am debating between a original MB Classic unit or a Blaupunkt Bremen DAB.
You can blame @lowman for the Blaupunkt beeing stuck in my head 😂

Edit: no pictures of the parts so far. Get some aditional parts from the seller later, plus have to through all of them when I find time

Yessss. OG headunit or similar! Its the only way to go.

The disdain that just about everyone on the forum has for new headunits in these older cars is awesome. I used to think I was the only one. Now I know I am not alone.:grouphug:

I don't have disdain for newer head units as long as they don't contrast with the original "looks" of the interior. That's why I've used the Continentals (VDO) in some older models, such as W126s, to replace the Becker. The Continental has a display which mimics the look of the original radio. I found that in the W126 cars I put Continentals into that people familiar with the model rarely noticed the radio was not original.

Exactly on point Dan (y)
Modern features are fine, but the look must be right!

What do you guys think regarding good looking wheels for the wagon:

Keep the stock 8-hole 6,5x15 wheels for summer and the steel wheels for winter or use the 8-hole for winter and get sth. different for summer tires?
The car will keep the stock ride height, not lowered.

So far, I know I do not want AMG wheels or similar on it (it is a E 200 😂), but think sth. like high sheen 7x15 (sportline W124 size), the .034s 8-hole 7x16 or the 7,5x17MB Ceginus (=Evo/.036 Ltd look) could look sharp!
High sheen wheels look great with the 199 paint!

Any ideas or opinions?

Sidenote: I do not want to do any modification to fenders, wheelhouses,...

Hallo 744,

If I were you, I’d go with 7x15 15 hole sportline wheels. Especially if you don’t lower the ride height. Everything beyond will look out of place in my opinion. Also, the whole “bark vs. bite” thing becomes a bit of an issue with more aggressive wheels (8 holes or evos). It’s your car though, so you need to do what looks best to your eyes.

Hey Tim,

thank you for your opinion!
After doing some research, I think you are right! (y)

The Evo-style wheels look great on W201s and W124 sedans. But in the pictures I found with a S124, they look out of place.

I have the stock 8-hole on it right now and like the look! But I guess I need a second set of wheels and use the current 6,5x15 8-hole for winter.

I personally prefer the 8 hole wheels to the 15 hole wheels on the W124. The 15 hole wheels look too "busy" to me, if that makes sense.

Dan
Dan,
I (again) know exactly what you mean and (again) have to agree! 😂

It kind of depends on the model-year imo:

Pre-facelift cars (until 1989) look strange with the 8-hole and were never delivered that way too.
On the other side, 15-hole were a factory option on 1st and 2nd facelift, but can look kind of off on them too. Especially on some 2nd facelift cars imho.

If I can find a good 8-hole set for ok money, I guess I will get them! Looks great now with 8-hole wheels on it!!

I can not keep from grinning seeing these two beautys in the workshop next to each other

60 holes is a lot to clean brake dust out of.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I never liked the 15 hole wheels. A real PITA to clean and difficult with all the sharp edges. A good reason for ceramic brake pads.

Alright,
I am still waiting for some parts for the wagon.
Everything I ordered at MB is here, but not everything else and will be here mid July latest. That sucks!!

No place to work (and time...) on the V8 at the moment. 😥
But doing research on needed/wanted things, part sources...

And had a little time to sort the first box of parts that came with the wagon and create an Excel list.
So many parts; electric, interior, some exterior parts...

Speaking of time, do you folks typically go on holiday for most of August like other parts of the EU? Just curious, as I dealt with this in a previous career working with clients in France and other parts of but never knew if Germany followed this, too.

Hey Dan,
yes, it is similar than in other European countrys!

Most people go on holiday during the 6-week school holiday. School holidays are on different times depending on the state.
In some nothern states that started this week, but in Southern Germany we have to wait until late July.

Understood. I just knew better than to plan any business trips to the Continent that time of year. Thank you!

Wanted to remove the mirrors on the wagon today to redo the boots:
The right mirror came out, but the metall-part is very corroded.
The left mirror has a rounded screwhead, so I could not remove it. The screw is probably corroded into the mirror metall and somebody tried it with brutal force.
Looks like I have to drill it out and get some new parts 😥

And the "triangle cover" that covers the mirror on the inside, is broken on that side too and was glued in with super glue.
Somebody was there before, ruined the screw and the cover. Great!

Guess that are the "downsides" of an Italian car...

On the good side, at least the new license lights are in.
And I could get a original MB roof-rack for 40 Euros. But need to find out if it fits the wagon first, no need for a roof-rack on the E420😂

You can grind a slot in the head and remote it with a flat blade screw driver. Before you do that slam the head firmly and it should come loose easily.
better not drill the head, try the above first

Hey Hakie,
thanks a lot for your tip!! (y)
I already tried it with slamming it a bit and other common methods.
No success so far, that screw is tight!

Great news:
The wagons headlights are finally here!!
I ordered Magneti Marelli lights for 150 each and the quality looks good so far! Hellas are about 500 each, so I guessed MMs are ok for the daily driver
Plus I got a water pump, a original leather shifter matching the leather steering wheel and some other parts at the local dealership...
Hope to make a bit of progress on Saturday!

The plan is to do myself what ever is possible without a lift, since the 420 is on the lift right now, I do not have it running and I run out of space to work with jacks.

The other stuff incl. TÜV will be done by my local indy workshop. Great guys, the boss learned at MB in the 90s before he took over his dads business and they love W124s...

An other benefit: In exchange, they are kind enough to make it happen to get the car to the workshop without a temporary plate.
Otherwise I would have to pay for a temporary plate to get it to the TÜV.
Plus waiting for plates and registry always takes a LONG time and they are only open doing the time I have to work and I can not take a day off for that right now.

Always very ‘impressive’ the hoops you EU guys must jump through to drive a car on the roads.

We’d likely have an outright rebellion if you wern’t allowed to drive your neglected Hyundai without bumper covers, poorly maintained brakes and a smashed windshield 80mph down the freeway.

It has its good sides too: Close to all cars on the road are in safe condition!
Now if only some drivers would leave the mobile phone alone while driving and cyclists would follow the rules...

Is that a requirement in Germany? In America, it's a constitutional right to use your cell phone however you want while driving. Just ask anyone using theirs behind the wheel while a car is in motion, they'll explain it. </sarcasm>

:grouphug:
That is interessting to know about the US!

Yes it is illegal in Germany. If you not have it in a not movable holder, you can end up paying 100 Euros and get 1 point. If sbd. is in danger during that or you crash into sth., it can go up to 200 Euros, 2 points and loss of the license for one month.
If you collect 8 points, you have to walk for at least 6 months.

But even in Germany that does not mean everybody follows it! Especially my generation uses the phone while driving a lot.

I can't count the times I've wanted to step out of my car, walk over to the driver stopped in front of me at a green light, reach in, grab their cell phone, and promptly smash it on the ground without saying a word, then walking back to my car and driving off.

:bat:

That is why I would love to have a car equiped with Code 452.
Make it look like there are two people honking the horns

Finally have the new leather shifter and the headlights in! What a difference!
And yes, I know the front bumper is a bit low on the passenger site. Will be fixed later when it needs to come of anyway...

Regarding the radio: The plan is to visit a local MB junkyard as soon as possible to search for some parts.
They hopefully have a fair priced MB Audio 10, Classic or similar. If not, I will use a Becker Europa 2000 (edit: it´s a Grand Prix 2000) I have laying around together with an adapter.
Other things are more imortant than a 1000% correct radio for now...

And waiting for response from my TÜV-guy regarding a diff-swap to a 2.82 diff right now.
Not needed, but would be nice to have if the stock speedo can stay in with an electronic converter.

And I picked up some wheels at the refurbisher for my fathers 450 SLC today. What a difference!

Hello everybody,

no real progress so far 😠
Lots of overtime at work the last few weeks, but no complains about that!

But: I recently had the chance to drive a low-mileage E500 Limited:love:

Well, here is my impression (no offense to anyone, I know this is the 500E board):

The red leather is very strange.

The 17" limited wheels look awesome with a 744 car!

The car pops out. I have seen various .036 in person, but driving one in person, people really notice it around where I life.
Quite some thumbs up...
Nice to have, but I like the "flying under the radar" with the 420 too. I guess it would attract too much interrest for me in the long run.

The engine and drivetrain is really nice and powerful. But as expected, no HUGE difference to the E420. The difference is there, but not like night and day...

And what impressed me most, is the suspension! Feels like on rails, no comparison to my (already good) E420! Makes me consider doing some suspension changes too...💰

Thanks for the driving impressions! I've always been curious to know how 'different' the two are. You would think that your engine and drivetrain notes would be enough to quench my thirst, but I find that I still want the 500! Must be those fenders ;)

Keep in mind that Euro .034 have 2.65 gears, while USA/Japan .034 have 2.24 gears. That alone makes a big difference. The Euro-spec E420 is probably not as big a difference compared to the E500.

Now, with a 6.0L engine... that's a difference you can't miss.

:wahoo:

Yes, a 2.65 here. With the S/E switch.
Don´t get me wrong: I still want that 5.0 in there. If possible (=street legal without crazy expenses) even with the 2.82 gearing!

I would love to try a 6.0 car:love:
MKB offered to make me one when I asked about an exhaust. But the price is way over my current budget...

Bought some parts at a wrecking yard specialiced on W124s yesterday!
Been there the first time and was blown away. Lots of good parts for a fair price, and a crazy company owner!
He owns 3 E500E plus one E60 and another E500 he is selling soon...
His latest project is a rustfree (US-import) E420 he puts in a supercharged 6.0 right now
I had the chance to hear the Fox-Racing silencer and muffler there too. I am not very impressed. Sounds almost like the stock exhaust😥 But good to know before buying one

Here is what I got:
a set of good condition 15-hole 7x15 Sportline wheels for the wagon. Some small scratches, but absolutely no curb rash!
A never used hood grill in the original package for cheap
2 90 Liter fuel sending units. One for a friend and one as a spare for me. The price was that good I took two😂
2 passenger side mirrors
2 mirror triangles for the wagon,
A good boot cover for the wagon
A D-pillar cover, again for the wagon
A set of M119 valve covers. Want to get them powdercoated as soon as I decided on a color

What he did not have at the moment and I still need:
a good electric driver side mirror
a original radio
a cassette box instead of the ashtray

I am sure I will buy more parts there in the future...
