Sorry to disappoint you with that!Uh oh.... is there a continental version of @JC220 in the making here?!?
No updates on the E420 so far, but I have an other "new" car coming this weekend:
A 1993 W124 in paint 199 with black fabric interior (very good condition), a manual gearbox and 280000km/175000miles
Headgasket, clutch and some other things were already changed a while ago.
The car run most of its life in Southern Italy and was imported to Germany in 2010. So it has only little rust.
It needs MOT, new brakes and brake fluid, new headlights and a new service. Sooner or later I need a new muffler too and probably some other things...
But the car came with LOTS of W124 parts, so all in all was only about 1500 Euros if you subtract the part values. I can not even fit all parts in the wagons trunk
I was looking for a W202 or W203 wagon, but could not pass a W124 wagon with less rust than most W202s around here for the same money as a good W202 C180 sedan.
The plan is to use this one as a daily driver from autumn on!
Not a rocket, but a solid car and M111 parts are plenty and often dirt cheap!
What do you mean? We already more or less have one. He goes by the name "@lowman". One of the growing hordes of what I call "Crazy Norgers" here on the forum. Arnt was the first, the trailblazer. We use ApplePay. They use MorePay......Uh oh.... is there a continental version of @JC220 in the making here?!?
No pictures so far, but as soon as I have any!Sounds like a cool project! Please share pics of the new addition!
I have a 2.0 m111 124 coupe and a spare 2.3 eaton supercharged m111 in my garage loft (You can see where I will head with that one)
The m111 is a reliable engine for sure and if yours has the head gasket etc done should be good!
What were the spare parts that came with?

Swedes too, particularly of the Taxi Driver and Ms. V-Max variety.![]()
Yeah, you are absolutely right! The E420 was intended to have a few little fixes but goes more and more towards a full restoration.@744Brillantsilber Glad to hear you are 'attempting' to keep your sanity. In the car world, the deep end creeps up quickly! Aint that right @JC220?
Yessss. OG headunit or similar! Its the only way to go.
The disdain that just about everyone on the forum has for new headunits in these older cars is awesome. I used to think I was the only one. Now I know I am not alone.![]()
Exactly on point DanI don't have disdain for newer head units as long as they don't contrast with the original "looks" of the interior. That's why I've used the Continentals (VDO) in some older models, such as W126s, to replace the Becker. The Continental has a display which mimics the look of the original radio. I found that in the W126 cars I put Continentals into that people familiar with the model rarely noticed the radio was not original.

Hallo 744,What do you guys think regarding good looking wheels for the wagon:
Keep the stock 8-hole 6,5x15 wheels for summer and the steel wheels for winter or use the 8-hole for winter and get sth. different for summer tires?
The car will keep the stock ride height, not lowered.
So far, I know I do not want AMG wheels or similar on it (it is a E 200), but think sth. like high sheen 7x15 (sportline W124 size), the .034s 8-hole 7x16 or the 7,5x17MB Ceginus (=Evo/.036 Ltd look) could look sharp!
High sheen wheels look great with the 199 paint!
Any ideas or opinions?
Sidenote: I do not want to do any modification to fenders, wheelhouses,...
Dan,I personally prefer the 8 hole wheels to the 15 hole wheels on the W124. The 15 hole wheels look too "busy" to me, if that makes sense.
Dan
Just brake less, brakes are overrated anyway60 holes is a lot to clean brake dust out of.

Or, find a way to spray tungsten carbide on your rotors...
Hey Dan,Speaking of time, do you folks typically go on holiday for most of August like other parts of the EU? Just curious, as I dealt with this in a previous career working with clients in France and other parts of but never knew if Germany followed this, too.
Dan
Hey Dan,
yes, it is similar than in other European countrys!
Most people go on holiday during the 6-week school holiday. School holidays are on different times depending on the state.
In some nothern states that started this week, but in Southern Germany we have to wait until late July.
Hey Hakie,You can grind a slot in the head and remote it with a flat blade screw driver. Before you do that slam the head firmly and it should come loose easily.
better not drill the head, try the above first
It has its good sides too: Close to all cars on the road are in safe condition!Always very ‘impressive’ the hoops you EU guys must jump through to drive a car on the roads.
We’d likely have an outright rebellion if you wern’t allowed to drive your neglected Hyundai without bumper covers, poorly maintained brakes and a smashed windshield 80mph down the freeway.
Is that a requirement in Germany? In America, it's a constitutional right to use your cell phone however you want while driving. Just ask anyone using theirs behind the wheel while a car is in motion, they'll explain it. </sarcasm>Now if only some drivers would leave the mobile phone alone while driving....
That is interessting to know about the US!Is that a requirement in Germany? In America, it's a constitutional right to use your cell phone however you want while driving. Just ask anyone using theirs behind the wheel while a car is in motion, they'll explain it.

That is why I would love to have a car equiped with Code 452.I can't count the times I've wanted to step out of my car, walk over to the driver stopped in front of me at a green light, reach in, grab their cell phone, and promptly smash it on the ground without saying a word, then walking back to my car and driving off.

Hello everybody,
no real progress so far
Lots of overtime at work the last few weeks, but no complains about that!
But: I recently had the chance to drive a low-mileage E500 Limited
Well, here is my impression (no offense to anyone, I know this is the 500E board):
The red leather is very strange.
The 17" limited wheels look awesome with a 744 car!
The car pops out. I have seen various .036 in person, but driving one in person, people really notice it around where I life.
Quite some thumbs up...
Nice to have, but I like the "flying under the radar" with the 420 too. I guess it would attract too much interrest for me in the long run.
The engine and drivetrain is really nice and powerful. But as expected, no HUGE difference to the E420. The difference is there, but not like night and day...
And what impressed me most, is the suspension! Feels like on rails, no comparison to my (already good) E420! Makes me consider doing some suspension changes too...![]()
Thanks for the driving impressions! I've always been curious to know how 'different' the two are. You would think that your engine and drivetrain notes would be enough to quench my thirst, but I find that I still want the 500! Must be those fenders![]()
Yes, a 2.65 here. With the S/E switch.Keep in mind that Euro .034 have 2.65 gears, while USA/Japan .034 have 2.24 gears. That alone makes a big difference. The Euro-spec E420 is probably not as big a difference compared to the E500.
Now, with a 6.0L engine... that's a difference you can't miss.
